Betsy -
I know of no online probate indices for any Massachusetts counties. I have
the published index for Plymouth Co. Probate 1686-1881, and there is no
probate there for either Thomas or Hannah (Peterson) Vaughn. I suspect that
Thomas did not die in Middleborough in 1773, as I can find no record of his
death in Middleborough VR.
You can find the catalog entries for LDS Franklin and Hampshire County
probate records by searching the Family History Library catalog online at:
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp
Choose the keyword search and use "franklin massachusetts probate" or
"hampshire massachusetts probate" for the keywords, without the quotes.
Shutesbury and New Salem are in Franklin Co., but as that county was
established from Hampshire Co. in 1811 the records you seek are probably in
the latter.
