Hello,

I don't know how many of you receive the on-line "Eastman Genealogy
Newsletter" but I wanted to tell you about an article from February which
discussed "the SLADE Mansion" in England ! Many of us saw this on the
News or on TV programs that the current owner of the Mansion wants to "leave
it" to a SLADE descendant - as he has no heirs !

http://blog.eogn.com/eastmans_online_genealogy/2006/02/slade_mansion_i.html

You will find interesting comments there, and some amusing comments in the
artilce "linked" at the bottom of that article !

(There are more "links" under the second article.)

Also, during the past week, I saw a lady in England being interviewed on
some TV show ! She and her husband had inherited one of the "very, very
old, family Mansions." It had formerly been surrounded by "wonderful
gardens," but they had fallen into disrepair. She decided they should be
brought back to life, and spent a lot of time, energy, and money restoring
the gardens !

In part of the interview, a comment was made that this (elderly) lady's
husband had died, and she would no longer be allowed to live there !
It seems that one of the "English Laws" (British Laws?) states that
"family Mansions" must remain in "family hands" -- and "wives" of men from
those families -- are "not" allowed to own the Mansion, and cannot even
remain living there after their husband passes !

I don't want to begin any political discussions, but every once in a while
I hear a reminder of how different ... Great Britain is .. from the
.S.A. - even past the year, 2000 !

For those in New England, enjoy your "Spring almost 70 deg. days" !!

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

P.S. If anyone from the other parts of the U.S. have a need for
"cemetery walks," this is the time of year to request them !
:o)
