Hello,
While at the Chelmsford Library yesterday, I looked at several books in
their Local History Room.
One book I was surprised to find was the book on Vital Records of Middleton,
MA. (Others call them the "tan books.")
In the book I found BANCROFT information. These are the BIRTHS:
"BANCRAFT (see also BANCROFT)
Sarah, d. Robert and Elezebeth, 17[45]
Timothy, s. Robert and Elezebeth (about 1743)
BANCROFT (see also BANCRAFT)
Andrew, s. Robert and Elizabeth, bp. 1767
Daniel, s. Robert and Elizabeth, bp. 1761
Elizabeth, d. Robert and Elizabeth, bp. 1750
Eunice, d. Robert and Elizabeth, bp. 1769
John Picket, s. Robert and Elizabeth, bp. 1760
Lucretia, d. Robert and Nabby, bp. 1797
Marjory, d. Robert and Elizabeth, bp. 1765
Mary, d. Robert and Elizabeth, bp. 1760
Robert, s. Robert and Elizabeth, bp. 1760
Sarah, d. Elizabeth, bp. 1747
Sereny, d. Robert and Nabby, bp. 1793
Severy, s. Robert and Elizabeth, bp. 1762
Thomas, s. Robert and Elizabeth, bp. 1760
(Only a few BANCROFT's mentioned under Deaths, Marriages.)
This was important to me as I have been trying to find out more about the
family of:
William and Sarah (BANCROFT) WILKINS of Middleton, MA.
They had 3 children, two of whom died as children.
I don't have my notes handy at the moment, but the "Bray WILKINS book,"
stated that Sarah BANCROFT was half-Native American, and that her mother was
a PICKETT. (I'm saying that from memory, so I might not be saying it
correctly.) The above shows the PICKET connection in Middleton.
A summary from above is that Robert and Elizabeth (PICKET??) BANCROFT
appear to have had at least 12 children, with an additional Sarah listed as
child of Elizabeth (w/o Robert ??):
CH: Sarah, Timothy, Andrew, Daniel, Elizabeth, Eunice, John Picket,
Marjory, Mary, Robert, Sarah?, Severy, Thomas !!!
And, Robert and Nabby BANCROFT had at least 2 children: Lucretia and
Sereny. Since they were born in the 1790's, they were probably the
granddaughters of Robert and Elizabeth BANCROFT.
.. I'd be curious to know if anyone else has information on this family !
.. I'd like to know if any BANCROFT researchers know whether William and
Sarah (BANCROFT) WILKINS headed to "Maine" in the 1770's !!!
I am trying to find out if it was "this" William WILKINS who lived in
Augusta, ME, and Pittston, Vassalboro, and Unity, ME, etc., seemingly from
the 1770's through the 1790's. That William was a surveyor, and he signed
up for "light service" in the War from Pittston, ME.
William and Sarah's surviving daughter, Eunice, married and lived in
Middleton, MA, but did not have children.
I am trying to find out if William and Sarah, IF they moved to "Maine" as
his brother did, had an additional child, Samuel WILKINS, between 1775 and
1780 in or near Unity, ME. William was still alive after
1790, but I can find "no" information on his wife after 1775. (Could she
have died in childbirth in "Maine?")
Samuel WILKINS was my ancestor (through 2 of his children), and I cannot
find out who his parents were ! And, I only know the first name of his
wife, Electra "Leeta" (_______) WILKINS, and wonder whether she was also a
Native American.
Thank you for your time.
Betty (near Lowell, MA)
P.S. Somehow the FREEMAN surname might be involved, as the youngest son
of Samuel and "Leeta" WILKINS was named George Freeman WILKINS, and George's
first (of 10) children was named, George "Freeman" WILKINS. (Maine and
New Brunswick families)
Samuel and "Leeta's" daughter, Mary Jane WILKINS, married my ancestor,
Joseph "Calvin" KIDDER (1799-1891) of Maine and New Brunswick.
