Subject: early birth question

Hello fellow listers,
I am wondering if anyone would be able to advise me on something that
might aid in solving a brick wall I am experiencing.
My question is -
My 3rd G-Grandfather was born 27 Oct. 1748 in Massachusetts, somewhere.
I am suspecting around Shrewsbury, or a town/village near it, as my 4th
G-Grandmother was born there. I suspect that his mother and father were
not married for some reason. (to this point I have not found the Finel
surname in any town/village in Massachusetts at that time period.) Can
anyone tell me if a birth to non married parents would have been
recorded in a set of town records and/or church records? I am currently
going threw various records plus tracking the locations I know my 4th
g-grandmother was in along with her siblings. Also I am now considering
her mothers family lineage as I found what I believe to be a paper
naming an uncle as a guardian for her that she requested when she was 18
years old in the same time period when my 3rd g-grandfather was born.
Thank you for any hints or suggestions,
Don Finel
