Melville's father, Allan Melville, an "importer of French Goods and
Commission Merchant" who traveled abroad, was a member of a substantial if colorful
Boston family.

His grandfather, Major Thomas Melvill, was a venerable survivor of the
Boston Tea Party whose refusal to change the style of his clothing or his manners
