John Eddy

John Eddy, b. abt. 1695, son of Rev. William Eddy of Crainbrook, Kent
County, England who
arrived at Plymouth in the ship, Handmaid, Capt. Grant, Master, Oct. 29,
1630.
He left Plymouth prior to Feb. 6, 1631-2, and settled at Watertown. Was
admitted freeman
Sept. 3, 1634. Selectman, 1635, 1636, and 1637; died Oct 12, 1684 aged 90
yrs. He applied
to the Court, Dec 15, 1673, "then aged 77" to be excused from training !
He had a temporary attack of insanity in March, 1633 (Winthrop, 1.101.) He
had two wives
(1) Amy the mother of his children. He m. (2) Joanna, who died Aug 25, 1683,
aged 80.
Some of his children were born before he came to Watertown. His Will dated
January 11,
1677-8, proved December 16, 1684, mentions two sons, Samuel Eddy & John Eddy
and four
daughters, viz: Mary Orton, Sarah Marion, Pilgrim Steadman and Ruth Gardner.

December 9, 1684 £216. Children:
1. Mary Eddy who m. Thomas Orton of Charlestown. Her dau. Mary Orton m.
Samuel Pearce
of Boston, prior to 1703.
2. Sarah Eddy who m. John Marion, a cordwainer of Watertown, admitted
freeman 1652; died
in Boston Jan 7, 1705, aged 86 yrs. Children:
1. Mary Marion buried Jan 24, 1641/2.
2. John Marion b. & d. 1643.
Probably they moved to Boston soon after this.
3. John Marion Jr. a member of the Artillery Company, 1691.
4. Isaac Marion b. 1652.
5. Samuel Marion b. 1655, member of the Artillery Company, 1691.
3. Pilgrim Eddy b. at Watertown Aug 25, 1634, m. (1) ____Baker (?Nathaniel?)
by whom
she had one son, Nathaniel Baker in 1694 of Boston. She m. (2) ____Steadman.
4. John Eddy b. Feb 16, 1636-7; a Selectman 1671; m. (?) July 6, 1693, Sarah
Woodward;
died 1694, administration was grant to his widow, Sarah, October 22, 1694.
5. Benjamin Eddy b. Sept 30, 1640, a cordwainer; admitted freeman Mar 22,
1689-90; m.
Sarah ____, His Will dated Aug 6, 1702, proved Dec 30, 1711. He died
November 22, 1711.

1. Samuel Eddy b. June 4, 1668, admitted full communion Dec 12, 1697; m. Dec
13,
1693, Elizabeth Woodward; admitted full communion Dec 12, 1697. Children:
1. John Eddy b. May 6, 1696.

3. Sarah Eddy b. May 9, 1700; m. June 11, 1730, Peter Hurd.
4. Samuel Eddy, Jun'r b. Aug. 18, 1701.
5. Elizabeth Eddy b. July 29, 1703.
6. Ebenezer Eddy b. Jan 9, 1704-5; (?) of Oxford, m. Ruth Ward.
7. Benjamin Eddy b. Nov 30, 1707; settled in Newton and by wife,
Elizabeth (?) Ward had 4 sons and 4 daughters, born between 1734 &
1748.
2. Sarah Eddy b. Oct. 31, 1670 admitted full communion Aug 3, 1690; m. Nov
15, 1699

3. Benjamin Eddy b. Sept 16, 1673, admitted full communion May 29, 1698; m.

Dec 7, 1707, Abigail Holden. He m. (2) Dec 17, 1713, Grace Holden. She died
in
childbed Nov. 9, 1714 and he m. (3) Nov. 1716, Elizabeth Philips. Children:
1. Grace Eddy b. Oct 24, 1714.
2. Jonathan Eddy b. Aug 6, 1717.
3. Elizabeth Eddy b. Nov 13, 1719.
4. Jonas Eddy b. Mar 20, 1721-2.
4. Deliverance Eddy b. July 15, 1676; adm. full communion Aug 17, 1701; m.
1719,
William Webb.
5. Elizabeth Eddy b. Feb 2, 1678-9; m. April 2, 1700, Ebenezer Allen.
6. Ruth Eddy b. Nov 3, 1681, m. Nov 15, 1699, Jonathan Stone. She died Oct
13, 1702
leaving a son Jonathan Stone b. 1702.

Weston, Mass.
7. Ruth Eddy who m. Ezekiel Gardner of Boston; eldest son of Samuel Gardner,
a tailor of
Boston.
8. Abigail Eddy b. Oct 11, 1643, not mentioned in her father's Will;
probably died young.
Zachariah Eddy of Plymouth had a son John Eddy born Oct 10, 1666.

Pilgrim Eddy m. (1) at Boston, April 22, 1656, William Baker. She m. (2)
___Steadman
before 1678. (The order of her marriages are not clear).
The Will of Samuel Eddy mentions wife Sarah, sons Samue & Benjamin;
daughters, Sarah
Coolidge, Deliverance Eddy, Elizabeth Allen, Ruth Stone and Johannah Eddy.
His Inventory
of real estate dated Dec 18, 1711. House and 30 acres £150; 7 acres near the
"Old Mill"
in Watertown, £50; 12 acres in lieu of township, £12; farm of 80 acres £60.
Total £272.
In 1684 he had been a Drummer whom the town refused to pay.
Benjamin Eddy, a tailor of Newton, son of Samuel & Elizabeth Eddy of
Watertown m. in 1733
Elizabeth Truesdale b. Mar 12, 1709, dau of Samuel Truesdale, Jun'r and
Elizabeth (Hammond)
Truesdale of Newton, and grandaughter of Samuel, Sen'r and Mary (Jackson) T.
of Newton.
She died 1751 and he m. (2) 1753, Hannay Day. He moved to Royalston where he
died 1798 aged
91 years. Children:
1. Tabitha Eddy b. Aug 27, 1734; d. 1736.
2. Elizabeth Eddy b. Mar 6, 1736; d. 1737.
3. Tabitha Eddy (again) b. July 19, 1738; m. W. Blackington of Needham.
4. Benjamin Eddy b. Oct 21, 1739; a soldier in the Revolution for 36 months,
m.
December 1760 Sarah Holland. Children:
1. Elizabeth Eddy b. AZpr 29, 1761 m. 1781, Elisha Cheney.
2. Hannah Eddy b. Dec 23, 1762.
3. Benjamin Eddy b. Sept 13, 1764; m. Dec 1785, Zelida Pierce. He m. (2)
1821, Mary Stone of Rindge. He m. (3) in 1827, the widow Martha Jackson.
He died 1852 aged 88 yrs. His 3d wife died October 1846. Children:
1. Polly Eddy b. May 25, 1786; d. 1788.
