Don't know where you're located, but Library of Congress has many, many city directories on microfilm. Many local libraries and historical societies also have microfilm versions of the local city directories. You may also check to see if the LDS Church has microfilm copies of city directories that can be ordered for viewing at your local LDS Family History Center.
