Frank E. Hemenway, Town Clerk of Framingham, Middlesex
County, MA was born in Framingham June 29, 1838, a son of
Elbra Hemenway, well known as a carpenter and joiner.
He was fourth in lineal descent from Ebenezer Hemenway
born in Framingham May 6, 1740, and in middle life serv-
ed in the Revolutionary War, being commissioned a lieut-
enant. Ebenezer Hemenway married Bathsheba Stone.
Their children were: Fanny, Levina, Olive, Josiah, Sally,
Adam, Samuel, Bathsheba and Lucy.
Adam Hemenway the sixth in the family group above named
was the next in this line. He was born March 17, 1777
and was a carpenter by trade, was Captain of the Framing-
ham Artillery, held the office of Selectman, and served
as a Representative to the General Court. In religious
belief he was a Unitarian. He m. Jan 31, 1804, Catherine
Patterson, dau of David Patterson, who like his father,
was a veteran of the American Revolution. They had five
children: Catherine, Emeline, Elbra, (father of Frank E;)
Elven and Elbert Hemenway.
Elbra married Mary Bond, dau of John Bond of Northboro,
MA. Three children were born of this union, namely,
Frank E., who was Town Clerk of Framingham for many years.
and Augustus A. and Mary C. who were both deceased in
1898. Augustus A. Hemenway married Georgianna P. Cate,
and had one child, Lillian R. Hemenway a school teacher
in Framingham.
Frank E. Hemenway was educated in the common school in
his native town. Having begun working with his father
at the carpenter's bench as soon as he was old enough to
handle tools, he afterward continued in the business
as a contractor and builder until 1885. Then he devoted
himself entirely to public duties. For twenty consequa-
tive years he served as Town Clerk. He was a member of
the School Board and of the Board of Assessors and for
three years he was one of the Board of Engineers of the
Fire Department.
He married Nov 18, 1876, Georgianna P. Cate Hemenway,
widow of his brother, Augustus A. Hemenway. They had one
son, Fred A. Hemenway.
