Okay! His name is William C. Virginia; on his pension he says he is 82
in 1878; in the 1860 census in Rome Ward 1, Oneida, NY he says he is 67,
born MA; in 1870 census in Rome Ward 2, he says he is age 78, born VT;
in 1880 census in Rome he says he is 88, born NY
He is sometimes listed as black and other times as mulatto. I believe
he is a son of Jeremiah Virginia, who, in the 1791 VT census, is in the
"other free person" column. William enlisted in the War of 1812 from
Fairfax, Franklin Co., VT, and that is the area where Jeremiah was
living at that time. If he is a son of Jeremiah Virginia, he should
have been born in VT, but I thought if I found him in MA somewhere it
would prove one way or the other whether he was Jeremiah's son.
Thanks for your interest,
Joann Nichols
