Thanks to Dale H COOK for the information and references.

Mary LOBEL was erroneously listed as the wife of James COLE
in the ca 1910 COLE Genealogy.
However, Pam THOMPSON is working on updating and
re-writing that work and has found documentation for the
marriage of James COLE to Mary TIBBES.
You can find several posts in the COLE list archives where
Pam has provided info re Mary TIBBES to that list.

I hope the info below from Pam THOMPSON helps to explain
the situation. I highly recommend searching the archives of the
COLE List for additional data.

In a post to the COLE List dated 25 Sept 2001,
Pam THOMPSON wrote

. . . terrific if everyone updated their records, . . . to reflect that

Mary Tibbes, not Mary Lobel,
was the wife of James Cole of Plymouth, MA. It's very misleading
for new Cole researchers! Also, that the ancestry of James himself
. . . , no records of his birth, siblings, or parents have been found.

I (Pam) submitted the following slightly edited info to the (COLE)
list in 1998:

In England in 1995 I (Pam) visited the Devon Record Office in Exeter
and got copies of the actual old entries for the marriage of
James Cole and Mary Tibbes (also spelled Tibbs and Tybbs in the
records) and various other records. They include the birth records
for sons James and Hugh as well as data on Mary's family:

James Coale married Mary Tibbes in Barnstaple 8 May 1625
[not 1 May 1625 as stated in The Great Migration book]
James, son of James Coale, was bapt. in Barnstaple 11 Feb 1626/7
Hugh, son of James Coales, was bapt. in Barnstaple 29 June 1628
[this record is particularly hard to read]

Mary was baptised in Barnstaple on 15 June 1598,
the daughter of John Tybbs

John Tibbs married Margarett Harris married in Barnstaple
on 11 Oct 1593
They had 9 children:
Marye bapt 15 June 1598 (3rd ch listed)

Margaret was baptised in Barnstaple 11 May 1573,
the daughter of Thomas Harris

Thomas Harrys married Alse Thorne in Barnstaple on
10 Nov 1572 [these old records are very hard to read]
They had at least 8 children in Barnstaple:
Margaret bapt. 11 May 1573 (1st ch listed)

My (Janice 11 ROBBINS) lines MA > ME from James 1 COLE
of Plymouth are:
James 1, James 2, John 3, Joseph 4,
Eleazer 5 1747 MA - 1833 ME Rev War patriot, m Lucy SHURTLEFF,
(Eleazer's family removed to Oxford Co, ME abt 1790 with the families of
friends who had also served in the Rev War from the Middleboro, MA area);
Calvin 6 COLE m Betsey SWAN, d/o William SWAN and Lucy ROBBINS;
Elbridge 7 COLE who m his 3rd cousin Arabel 7 COLE (Consider 6,
Joseph 5, John 4, 3, James 2, 1);
Sylvester 8 b 1849 m Mary Jane "Jenny" TUCKER d/o Geo W TUCKER;
Stillman Ransom 9 1877 - 1917 m Mabel 5 PENLEY 1882 - 1930.
They lived in the Woodstock / Greenwood / Norway / S Paris area of
Oxford Co, Maine thru my mother's early childhood.
The last entry in the 1910 book in my line was:
including Elbridge 7 as one of ch of Calvin's 6. In my line, the 1910
book
was some 95 years out-of-date. My G gf Sylvester 8 who was b in 1849
was abt 60 years old when that COLE genealogy was published.

It's great to see the interest in the James COLE and Mary TIBBES of
Plymouth line on this list.
