I believe that the Petition of Adoption of Grace Oliver gives her correct name. Grace was 14 years old on twentieth day of January A.D. 1900, the day she signed her name to the document.
It is now believed that Grace was the illigitimate daughter of Fannie Sproat and Arthur Ayling. Grace was born two months before Fannie and Arthur were married. It could be that Fannie gave her up for adoption by James A. & Mary J. Oliver. Later, when Arthur couldn't have any children with Cora, he decided to adopt her as his own. It was upon Grace's death that she was buried next to her mother, Fannie Sproat Ayling, in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Taunton, Mass., before being moved to the Forest Hills Cemetery in Boston, in the same lot as her father, Arthur Ayling.
I'll be interested in learning of the decision made by the NEGHS regarding their birth register. Thank you so much for your participation in helping with this family. Carol
