For list readers who may be facing this type of problem for the first
time, there are two principal compilations of lists of ships's
passengers to Massachusetts. They are:
Charles Edward Banks, "The Planters of the Commonwealth. A Study of
the Emigrants and Emigration In Colonial Times: ... 1620-1640"
(Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1930; repr. Baltimore: Genealogical
Publishing Co., 1961)
John Camden Hotten, "The Original Lists of Persons of Quality ... Who
Went from Great Britain to the American Plantations 1600-1700"
(London: The Author, 1874; repr. New York: Empire State Book Co., 1931)
Banks organized the lists by year, and noted that by 1638 Governor
Winthrop, in his journal, had ceased to record passenger arrivals by
ship and lumped all the passengers together. About September 1 of
that year he noted that in the summer of 1638 twenty ships arrived
bearing at least three thousand passengers [Journal 1:322, see full
citation below].
Banks did provide lists for some 1638 ships from other sources, such
as the Diligent, whose passengers went largely to Hingham, for which
we have a list of passengers to that town recorded by the Clerk of that town.
Neither Banks or Hotten lists Francis, but Governor Winthrop's journal:
James Savage, "The History of New England from 1630 to 1649 by John
Winthrop, Esq.," 2 Vols. (Boston: Little, Brown & Co., 1853; repr.
Baltimore: Clearfield Co., 1996)
lists "Francis More" among those desiring to be freemen on
22-May-1639 [Journal, 2:450], leading to the assumption that he
arrived in the Colony in 1638.
