I did some searching in the Fall River vitals. I'm not sure if this is the right family but it seemed to fit.
(If you need the cites I can provide them.)
Married 16 July 1858 John Melvin age 21 Spinner born England to John & Ann. Margaret McCarthy age 20 born New Jersey to Maurice and Anna.
They did not remain married long. Margaret died on 12 April 1859 age 20 born New Jersey, wife of John. She could possibly have had a son in the time frame but I could not locate a birth record for James.
John remarried a woman named Mary Norsman on 18 July 1864. John age 27 Spinner born England to John Melvin and Ann Jones his second marriage. Mary Norsman age 22 born England to Francis and Elizabeth Bright 1st marriage for her.
Perhaps this would explain the big age difference between James and John. Mary's last name Norsman is pretty hard to read on the marriage entry but when compared to John's birth record (see below) it is probably Norsman.
I located John's birth record on the 24 of April 1869 to John and Mary Norsman. I think perhaps he died of Croup in 1875. There is a death entry for John on 23 May 1875 showing his age 6 years and 29 days son of John and Mary.
I will try and locate death records for John and Mary. There is a John Melvin born England that died in 1898 at the age of 60 but there were no other identifiers (parents names etc.)
