Hi Irene
Thanks for getting back to me.
Joseph Symes had 2 sisters-Alice Tibbot (13 Feb 1886, Mosselden, Rishworth, West Riding of Yorkshire) and Mary Jane Symes born at Ridding Delph (same as Joseph) on 25 Dec 1888. He also had a step brother-Norman Symes who was born much later(13 Oct 1911, in Stalybridge, Cheshire). Joseph's father (Walter) William Symes remarried in Jul 1909-Mary Ellen Kennedy b 23 Jul 1878, Clitheroe, Lancashire. She is Norman's mother.
On the 1901 census (Walter) William Symes is listed as widowed and he and Joseph are living at a place called Langsett WRY. (Walter) William like his father worked on the reservoirs-he accompanied his father (Samuel Symes) on the journey north from Dorset after his mother (Samuel's 1st wife) died.
Just prior to Joseph migrating to America I think he was living with his father and stepmother at 110 Kenworthy St Stalybridge. Mary Jane Symes, his sister was also living there and this is where his step brother Norman was born (and subsequently my mother).
Joseph's father (Walter) William had many brothers and sisters and it has taken a long time to identify them all.
I now know Joseph's 1st wife, Florrie Saxon, died quite young and he then married Eliza Alice Fitton. I am also aware that the Saxon family (and Eliza) assummed the name Symes when they travelled to America (and met up with Joseph in New Bedford). Eliza as you probably know was a boarder in the Symes/Saxon household at the time of the 1920 census.
I haven't yet found a connection between Eliza and the Saxon family that would perhaps explain why she migrated with them and then was living with them in New Bedford.
I also know Eliza and Joseph were divorced but do not know when (nor where) and having just obtained a copy of Joseph's death certificate have just discovered Joseph was possibly married for a 3rd time.
I have some of the Tibbot and Symes info summerised and could sent it as an attachment if you like. I would like to know more about Eliza (I have identified the family on the 1891 census) and I am happy to be contacted directly:
Sue
