Hello,

In the 1790 census for Maine there are only 4 households with the DEXTER name. This family shows up in Deer Isle:

DEXTER, WILLIAM P (1790 U.S. Census)
MAINE , HANCOCK, DEER ISLE
Series: M637 Roll: 2 Page: 63

There is also a Thomas DEXTER in Washington County, and Isaac DEXTER and Nathan DEXTER in Lincoln County. In 1800 there are 8 DEXTER households, most in Kennebec County. In 1810 there is this household. And 14 households in total.

DEXTER, ZENUS (1810 U.S. Census)
MAINE , HANCOCK, TWP 3 RANGE 2
Series: M252 Roll: 11 Page: 607

The 1820 census has William in Deer Isle again. I'm not finding an Elisha DEXTER at all in Maine during those years.

DEXTER, WILLM (1820 U.S. Census)
MAINE , HANCOCK, DEER ISLE
Series: M33 Roll: 34 Page: 133

In 1790 there was an Elisha DEXTER in MA and in CT. This man was in this town up to 1820. He seems to be still in Plymouth County in 1860.

DEXTER, ELISHA (1790 U.S. Census)
MASSACHUSETTS , PLYMOUTH, ROCHESTER
Series: M637 Roll: 4 Page: 492

That's all for the moment.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

P.S. I'm interested in a DEXTER family in Killingly, CT, from mid-1700's to mid-1900's. John and Mary DEXTER left there ~1888 to move to Melrose, MA. In 1892 they adopted a little girl who grew up to become my grandmother.

(My educated-guess is that they were her maternal grandparents; I believe their married daughter in CT had a pregnancy outside of her marriage during the summer of 1888.) (Family photos show a family-resemblance, but I need to find an old photo of Mrs. Clara (DEXTER) YOUNG of Killingly.)
