Hi Martha,
I just checked the 1880 census for MOTT in Essex Co., MA, and I see a probable father and son, both named, Thomas MOTT, in Salem. They are not married, and living with other people.
MOTT, THOMAS H (1880 U.S. Census)
MASSACHUSETTS , ESSEX, SALEM
Age: 25, Race: WHITE, Born: MA
Series: T9 Roll: 532 Page: 557
I can't read the occupation of the 54 yr old father, but this son is a clerk in a store. They came from MA families.
There are a few other MOTT families in Lawrence and Swampscott, MA. There are over 100 MOTT people in MA in 1880. I just checked 1900 and am only finding one Thomas MOTT, and he was born in England. He has a wife and adult daughter with him:
MOTT, THOMAS (1900 U.S. Census)
MASSACHUSETTS , BRISTOL, 3-WD TAUNTON
Age: 68, Male, Race: WHITE, Born: ENGL
Series: T623 Roll: 639 Page: 177
For the MOFFAT name, I'm finding this lady in 1880 in Salem, MA. She seems to be a "Sister" and is one of many ladies from Canada, all listed as Sisters. (Listers doesn't make sense.)
MOFFAT, ANN JANE (1880 U.S. Census)
MASSACHUSETTS , ESSEX, SALEM
Age: 36, Race: WHITE, Born: CANA
Series: T9 Roll: 532 Page: 789
There are other MOFFAT people in Lawrence, MA, in 1880.
There is a large MOFFATT family in 1880 in Essex Co. but they are in Rockport, MA.
That's all I can offer right now.
Betty (near Lowell, MA)
