Just to clarify - the cause of death for James Poland is listed as uraemia complicans, a now somewhat archaic medical term routed in Latin. Uraemia (the British spelling - we would use uremia today) literally refers to the accumulation of waste products in the blood that would ordinarily be filtered out by the kidneys in the urine - in other words it is an indicator of kidney (renal) failure. complicans refers to the fact that the paralysis and uremia "tied up" to be a cause of death - in other words, he suffered paralysis complicated by renal (kidney) failure.
