Hello,

I just checked census pages, and found a Mary FLAVIN staying at the "Tewksbury State Hospital" in 1880. She was born in Ireland.

FLAVIN, MARY (1880 U.S. Census)
MASSACHUSETTS , MIDDLESEX, TEWKSBURY
Age: 63, Race: WHITE, Born: IREL
Series: T9 Roll: 539 Page: 500

It's a reminder to others that many people went to stay at the State Hospitals during those late 1800's. My great-great-grandmother had recently given birth to 2 daughters in a row, and ended up at Danvers State Hospital (1880 census). I can only guess that the 2 girls were raised by their grandparents on the HUTCHINSON Farm for a few years, while still toddlers.

The 1880 census also has a Mary FLAVIN staying at the "St. Peter's Orphan Asylum" in Lowell.

FLAVIN, MARY (1880 U.S. Census)
MASSACHUSETTS , MIDDLESEX, LOWELL
Age: 14, Race: WHITE, Born: MA
Series: T9 Roll: 545 Page: 347

There were 14 FLAVIN's in Middlesex County that year, and 66 in MA. There were only 56 FLAVIN's in MA in 1900.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)
