Most of the 1890 US Federal Census records were destroyed in a fire. There are some interim state census records available, but not for Mass, Maine, or NH. I assume he was in one of those locations through the 1890's based on the marriage record (http://tinyurl.com/6eklvmc) and the 1900 census.
