Hi Margaret,
Thank you for taking so much time with this. The Athol Transcript no longer exists - it was absorbed into what is now Athol's daily paper (Athol Daily News). I contacted them several years ago, but got no answer. We live in the same state, and I have been there once several years ago to research, but think I need to make another trip and visit the paper as well as to re-visit the town clerk's office and the library.
Edward & Louise (or Louisa - it says something different depending on what you're looking at, but her tombstone says Louise)had 3 children. George was the oldest, Jessie born in 1872, then Elsie (my grandmother) in 1873. Louise died on December 31, 1878. Her cause of death is listed in the town vital records as "uterine peritonitis." Upon her death, George & Elsie went to live with their grandparents (Louisa & Rupus Leonard), and Jessie went to live with her great-aunt (Louisa Leonard's sister), who had at least one child that had died and the remaining child (a son) away at college. No idea why they split them up, unless the aunt wanted to have a child in the house. All very sad.
If you'd like to look at the Edward Jones family on Ancestry, it is in the "Hurd Family Tree". It's a public tree and my user name (as above) is ginnyc01. And, yes, I got Edward's date of death from his tombstone. I just got through with a project of sorting out pictures from various cemetery visits (great that I have a patient husband!), and will post those pictures on Ancestry soon. Meanwhile, I've attached the pictures of the stone.
Thanks again.
Ginny
