Subject: [GENMASSACHUSETTS] Obituaries which Mention Genealogy (HUNTER)
Date: Tue, 8 May 2012 05:34:02 -0700 (PDT)
Hello,
It's not very often that an obituary in current newspapers mention that the deceased was a genealogist. And, it's even less often that the obituary mentions the person's ancestor. But, in "The Lowell Sun" yesterday there was an obituary which offered both information. The obituary is for Mrs. Patricia (Pat) HUNTER CURTIS born in Holyoke, MA, to HUNTER / WITT parents. She had a first marriage in CT, and then was currently married to John CURTIS of Harvard, MA.
I'll only mention the parts which mention her genealogy and her ancestor:
"Besides her children, Pat's passions were gardening and genealogy. ... she also completed an ancestors and descendants genealogy for both sides of her family that dates well before her ancestor, Thomas CLARK, a carpenter, an immigrant 1623 on the "Anne" in England, a mate on the "Mayflower." "

I'm just looking up the ship, Anne, in 1623, and find the list of passengers here. This page mentions Thomas CLARK. But, it also says that many of the passengers were the wives and children left behind when the husband left on the "Mayflower" in 1620. It also mentions the ship, "Little James."

On quick look, I'm not finding much on-line for the ship, "Little James." But, it is mentioned on the Mayflower List, and it is briefly mentioned on this other site.

Just an FYI for you.
Betty (near Lowell, MA)
P.S. Since I'm mentioning early ships, I'd just like to say that there is very little information on the ships arriving in the 1640's -- as far as I know. For example, no one knows when my ancestor, James KIDDER (1626-1676) arrived in the Colony, supposedly arriving ~1645.
P.S.2 Just a reminder that one of my "concrete-block wall" ancestors was a James CLARK who "appeared" in Little Compton, RI, in ~1827. He married in 1829 in Westport, MA, and fathered a child there, and then "disappeared" in 1844. No one knows where he came from.
