Subject: [LAWINN-L] Alice ADAMS Questions

In the mid-1860's, the widow Columbia ??? GOFF (widow of James L. Goff who
died in Conf. service) married the Winn Parish widower, William Henderson
SMITH (whom I think was a son of Isham Smith of MS. to Winn). Into the
Smith household came Columbia's 3 GOFF children: Ida (b. 1857 in MS.);
Charles Clinton (b. 1859 in TX) and Alice (b. 1861 in TX). This Smith
family moved to the Ruby area of Rapides Parish in the 1870's. Apparently,
Ida and Alice did not move with them.
I have heard from several Adams researchers that Washington Burgess
Adams (the one who was charged with murder and mentioned in the most recent
issue of the Winn Genealogical publication). I had also been told that
Alice had taken her step-father's name of SMITH. However, Wash. Adams'
wife, Alice, was apparently not the daughter (or step-daughter) of William
Henderson Smith, but, rather another Smith gentleman. Also, in the 1880's,
and Alice GOFF married a L. Battles, in Rapides Parish.
Does anyone have any source record showing actually what Alice was Wash.
Adams' wife? Any help on this confusion would be most appreciated.
Thanks....
