James Leigh (John's father) was born in appx. 1905 in Ireland. He married Catherine Murphy (also of Ireland) and they had children Margaret, Mathew, John, James, Patrick (b. 1832 in Ireland), Thomas, Mary Ann, Martha, Peter and Joseph. Murphy died in Maine, the state the Leigh's first lived upon emigrating to the U.S. Later, James moved the family to Wisconsin. Peter married Anna in the early 1870 (arrived in the U.S. 1838) and they had children Mary, Lewis, and Paul.
