Hello Joanne
Watts, Watts & Co (not a limited company) was first formed in 1856 as Watts,
Milburn & Co, and, following changes in the partnership, was renamed Watts,
Ward & Co, in 1872. In 1896 it became Watts, Watts & Co.
Britain Steamship Co Ltd was formed in 1885, and its vessels were MANAGED by
Watts, Ward/Watts, Watts. More recently, in 1968, when Watts, Watts & Co
decided to give up ship mangement, Britain Steamship Co Ltd was purchased by the
Liverpool-based Bibby Brothers & Co.
Watts, Watts & Co has diverse interests, one of which was as a Lloyd's
insurance broker, and I had dealings with this company for several years when I was
editor of one of Lloyd's publications. The company was very proud of its
history, and its office contained an abundance of ship models, paintings, and
artefacts.
Britain Steamship Co Ltd and Watts, Watts & Co were not the same company, as
has been suggested.
I have images on my files of several ships of Britain Steamship Co Ltd from
around 1900, and a short history of the company, and if you would care to
contact me at <>, I would be pleased to pass on e-versions of whatever
I can.
Regards
Roger Jordan
