Julia,
Would it be helpful to know that in 1900 US Census Franklin Twp, Rowan Co., NC ED 104 sheet 14 this appears:
Jacobs, Charles head white male b May 1866 age 34 married 9 years b NC parents b NC farmer rents this property
Jacobs, Bettie E. wife white female b Oct 1868 age 31 married 9 years 4 children 3 still alive. b NC parents b NC
Bessie J daughter white female b Aug 1894 age 5 b NC
William H. Son white male b April 1896 age 4 b NC
John A. son white male b May 1899 age 1 b NC
Sounds like the right family from the info you provided, seems then that Bettie was indeed his first wife and that he was married to her for at least 9 years having been married about 1890 and had 4 children, one of whom died in infancy. They were living in Franklin TWp where there might be a burial ground containing the grave of the missing and presumed deceased child and perhaps a grave for Betty.
In 1910 he is married to Cora. Bessie age 15 and William age 14 are living with them. Cora age 33 and Charlie age 40 have been married 3 years.
but the record indicates he has been married only once and that it is the second marriage for Cora - I just might bet the farm that this is an error on the part of the census taker.
Nothing tells us what Betty Jacobs maiden name was but it might be on her gravestone or on the death certificate of a child.
in 1880 in Locke Twp Rowan Co there was a family named Murph with father William age 40 wife Laura age 49 children Martha J age 13 and Bettie age 11 as well as an eight year old son named John.
If you need more details from this census let me know
Agnes Cloninger
