Hi
I found the first letter you sent to me.
I was given some copies of loose pages from the Stewart Clan Magazine by
a local genealogist, showing Robert Stewart born 1748 in New Bern, craven co.
N.C. thru Cumberland co.N.C. and on to Wilkes co. Ga.then Old pendleton
district (Pickens co.S.C.) died in 1835 in Pickens co.S.C.
He was in the revolutionay war and received a land grant.
He was my gggggrandfather.
The SCM stated that his father may be Capt.John Stewart (may have came
from Scotland to Cape fear N.C.) He was slain in the revolutionary war while a
resident of Wilkes co.Ga. before 1784.
His son James applied for a state land grant. He was my ggggggrandfather
Capt.John Stewart's heirs were children James, Robert(my line) Charles
and Lydia.
I stll have much to research.thank you again for your help
Would you please appease my curious nature and tell me how you have 40
years of notes on this subject? Are you an Author? You know this means you must
write me again.please.
Thanks again
Gay Stewart Beam

Unless someone has already put the Stewart family together, I do not know
where to tell you to start on the internet. The Stewert, Seeward, Start,
Sterd, Steurt, Stevert, Steward, Stewert, Stuart, Stueart, Sturt families were
prominent in the southwestern area of original Wilkes County, some of which
was put into Greene County in 1786, and some into Oglethorpe County in 1793.
Then, when the lower boundary of Oglethorpe County was shifted north from the
Ogeechee in 1799, some of this area was put into Greene County. One area
remained in Wilkes County until 1802, when it was put into Greene County. Then
in 1825, some of it was put into Taliaferro County. So, you will have to
search all these counties to cover all the bases.
I can tell you that a Robert Stewart was in Wilkes County in 1785 and 1794.
May I suggest that you go to a good genealogical library and spend four or
five hours studying "Wilkes County, Georgia Tax Records, 1785-1805", not just
the data, but the text.
Then there is the "1800 Census for Oglethorpe County"; the NARA film
publication M1745 entitled "Claims for Georgia Militia Campaigns Against
Frontier Indians, 1792-1827"; an article in Georgia Genealogical Society
Quarterly, Vol 4 No. 1, entitled "1798 Census of the First (upper) Battalion
of Greene County"; and get your local LDS FHC to order in the films of the
1799 and 1800 Tax Digests for Oglethope County, and the 1799 and 1801 Tax
Digests for Greene County. Good Luck. You will be proud of the Stewarts.
Frank Parker Hudson
Three complete Militia Districts were taken from Oglethorpe County and put
into Greene County by two acts of the General Assembly in 1799. It appears
that Captain William Stewart's District was split in these transfers.
