Dear Gay, In response to your plea after losing your email, and for the
benefit of others who have flooded me with requests for more information
regarding ancestors who were originally in Wilkes County, later Greene County,
later Oglethorpe County, later Greene County, etc., without ever moving, I'll
put down all I know and post in on GEORGIA-L and hope it helps solve some
problems. Please print this on hardcopy. I will never do it again.

Understanding the boundary changes brought about by the Acts of 25 Dec 1794,
16 Feb 1799, and the amendment of 30 Nov 1799 is essential, and you will find
it explained in the Wilkes Tax Records cited above.
Example: Many taxpayers found in Capt. Edmondson's District of Oglethorpe
County in 1794 are found in the 1798 Census for the First Bn of Greene County.
They did not move. The swap of land between Oglethorpe County and Greene
County in Dec 1794 extending Oglethorpe to the Oconee River while Oglethorpe
gave up it's land on the North Fork of the Ogeechee to Greene changed the
address of a lot of individuals and families.
The Recapitulation for the 1799 Oglethorpe County Tax Digest for District 12
reads: "The Academites, or Small Parts taken from Green (e) County". The title
page (pg 40) reads: "Capt. Daniel Robert's District--The small part taken off
Greene County". A marginal note reads: "Poore Oglethorpe, how thou art fallen
in thy expectations" Three pages are titled for Districts that are no longer
in Oglethorpe County, and are used to record the bits and pieces of the
"Academites". Two of the titled districts were Capt. Thomas Wagnon's and Capt
William Stewart's, which are found in the 1799 Greene County Digest. The 29
returns in Oglethorpe County in 1799 in Capt. Robert's District taken from
Greene County were:
Edmond Peters, John Spears, Laurence Briers(?), Abram Eason, James Brown,
Lemuel Cranford, Samuel Bellah, Moses Bellah, Rubin Bellah, John Warnock,
Robert Howard, John Richey, John Wiatt, Sr., Asa Chaddocks, Jonathan
Hardigree, Jesse Harris, Thos Harris, John Wiatt, Jr. John Wray, James Wiatt,
Thomas Phillips, John Beland, Moses Stamps, Samuel Piles (or Peters), George
Pierce, James Potts, John McClung, David Moore, and Archibald Crafford.
Page 40 of the 1800 Oglethorpe County Tax Digest reads: "Capt. William
Stuart's District, formerly Green (e) County, now Oglethorpe County" includes
returns for: Isaiah Lowe, Jno Starkey, Jr., Wm Calahan, Alex Commin, Lewis
Pierce, Thos Ald. Sikes, Gatewood Dunn, ditto for Larkin Wilson,Wm McLain,
Reubin Glaze, Robert Russel, Edward Hardin, Wm Stewart, Thos Loyd, Jr., and
Walton Dossey.
Page 42 of the 1800 Oglethorpe County Tax Digest reads: "Oglethorpe County,
formerly Greene County from Capt Watson's District" and includes returns for:
Jos Street, Jesse Garratt, Miles Garratt, John Lowery, Saml Thompson, ditto
for Nancy Thompson, Wm Thompson, John Wray, ditto for Wm Richey, Joseph
Thompson, James Ward, Walter Shropshire, ditto for Wm Shropshire, ditto for
Jno Shropshire, ditto for Bartho Shropshire, ditto for Isaac Dotson, ditto for
Mat Belcher, Parmenas English, Rice (?) Cason (or Eason), Wm Hert, Richd Ward,
and John Waller Key.
I have to stop somewhere, so I'll stop here. All this is taken from notes now
forty years old. Forgive me for any errors. Good Luck Frank Parker Hudson
