Subject: Will of Archibald McNeill, Nov. 1834, Robeson County

My cousin and I are trying to piece together our McNeills. Our earliest
proven ancestor is Catherine McNeill, b. 1823 in NC and wife of John M.
Jordan. They lived in Marion County, Florida. All indicators are that her
father was Neil McNeill, b. about 1798 in NC who lived next door to her. We
know Neil had a brother named James McNeill who also lived in the Marion
County area of Florida.
She found a will of an Archibald McNeill in the Family History Library in
Gainesville, FL. It was proved in November of 1834. It indicated he was
from Robeson County, NC.
It listed wife Effie, sons William C., James, Neill, and John. Also listed
were daughters Jane, Nancy, and Elizabeth McNeill, Margaret Malloy, Mary
McMillan and Catherine Blount.
The executor was Duncan Malloy and the witnesses were Alexander McMillan,
Gray Cobb, Hector McNeill and the word Tailor (unable to determine if that
is a name or an occupation?).
This family is listed in "Carolina Scots". Archibald is listed as the son
of Jane Campbell and William McNeill, both born in Scotland.
We are looking at this family of Archibald as a *possible* because of the
similar names and dates. Well, the dates are off a little, but then we are
only doing some *assuming* right now.
Is anyone on the list researching the other children of Archibald? Or does
anyone know any more about this Neill, son of Archibald? He appears to be
the son of Archibald and his 2nd wife Barbara Patterson, and some queries I
found on Genforum suggests his birth date was 1790. From the census, we had
determined 1798 as the birthdate of *our* Neill. That does throw us off a
little.
In another post I will show some interesting information on a James McNeill
who d. 1861 in Columbia County, Florida. Trying to tie the two together.
Happy holidays to all on the list. And I do recommend "Carolina Scots". I
am amazed at the amount of information it contains!
