Message Board Post:
Rick,
I thought you might have an interest in this latest bit of information I was able to pick up regarding our great-grandfather Timothy Charles CRONIN.
The Wisconsin State Historical Society transmitted Civil War record registration for Timothy Charles CRONIN from the Army Regimental Rolls taken from the ‘Red & Blue Books.’ These records, to my knowledge, had not been available in the National Archives when I initiated my research on my great grandfather over two years ago.
The discovery I made was startling, and it certainly raises more questions than answers.
On the “Descriptive Roll of Company K, 23rd (Wisconsin) Infantry Regiment,” (known as the ‘Blue Book’), CRONIN, Timothy is the 29th person listed on the roll. The following information is provided:
Rank:Private
When Enlisted: 21 December 1863
Where Enlisted:Madison (WI)
Term of Enlistment:3 years
Muster Date:31 December 1863
Where Mustered:Madison (WI)
Age at Enlistment:18
Married/Single:(Not indicated)
Eyes:Gray
Hair:Dark
Complexion:Dark
Height:5 ft 5 in
Occupation:Laborer
Credited to:Town/City: Madison County: Dane
Residence:(Not indicated)
Comments include the following: “Timothy CRONIN transferred to Company B, 35th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment on 11 July 1865.”
The foregoing factual information coincides with much of the family and Greeley County (NE) historical information held. There was a note that caught my attention on the ‘Blue Book’ entry under his name cryptically stated: Crownier (D.M.I)
In the “Muster and Descriptive Roll of Company K, 23rd Infantry Wisconsin Volunteer Regiment,” (known as the ‘Red Book’) that provides the initial enlistment information, Timothy CROWNIER is cross referenced directly to Timothy CRONIN. In the Comments section of the ‘Red Book,’ the following statement is written:
“Transferred to 35 Wis. Infty. July 1, 65. (Cronin, Timothy on transfer roll.)” [Emphasis added.]
It's an assumption that our great grandfather may have changed his surname at some point after 21 December 1863 and before July 1865 from CROWNIER to CRONIN. Other salient information provided in the ‘Red Book’ entry for Timothy CROWNIER includes:
Rank:Private
Birthplace:Chicago, ILL.
Enlistment Age:18
Occupation:Laborer
Married or Single:(Not indicated)
When Enlisted:Dec. 21, 63
Where Enlisted:Madison (WI)
Term of Service:3 Years
Eyes:Gray
Hair:Dark
Complexion:Dark
Height:5 ft 5 in
Date Mustered:January 4, 1863
Where Mustered:Madison (WI)
Residence:(Not indicated)
Where Credited:Madison City/Dane County
The Civil War enlistment data of Timothy (CROWNIER) CRONIN affects nearly all the known family and Greeley County (NE) historical information held. A few of the immediate questions that arise are:
Where was Timothy (CROWNIER) CRONIN born? Chicago, Illinois or Ireland?
What was Timothy’s surname at birth?
What was Timothy’s age at the time of enlistment into the GAR? 15 as commonly thought (due to lying about his age) or 18?
Where did Timothy (and his immediate family) reside at the time of his enlistment?
What was Timothy’s ‘laborer’ occupation at the time of his enlistment?
I look forward to any family contributions and research insights to unravel some of the genealogical conundrums that the Civil War records have generated on our great grandfather.
I hope all is well with the family.
Regards,
Phil Graham
