Quote of the Day -- 15 April 2003
" 'He acted like he had no relatives,' Leaphorn thought and grinned
wryly at the old-fashioned expression. When he was a boy, it was the
worst thing his mother could say about anyone." --from "The Blessing

Letters to the Editor
:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:
Faye Irvin's comment that "Maryland Archives no longer accepts mail
requests for records for genealogical research" generated several
e-mail messages explaining the change in policy. Here is one from
Robert Barnes, a professional researcher and part-time Reference
Archivist.
Dear Editor:
I read the comments about the Maryland State Archives in UpFront,
Vol.2, No.7. I am part-time Reference Archivist at the Maryland State
Archives, and also a professional researcher.
The Reference and Research Department has about 12 people to handle
approximately 35,000 requests a year. We are still answering mail and
e-mail requests for vital records if they are needed for legal
purposes (social security, citizenship, divorce, inheritance).
However, we just do not have the staff needed to answer requests for
vital records for genealogical purposes.
Our agency is not fully funded by the State. Nevertheless we are
striving to do the best we can in difficult circumstances. We are
planning to put the vital record indices online.
This link will explain our policy in full:

A Closer Look at Close-Up Photography, Part 2
I received several comments in response to "A Closer Look at Close-up
Photography, Part 1" (Upfront, Vol. 2, No. 7) that I would like to
share with the readers. First, I remember saying that the metric
system was not my strong point, and then foolishly and unknowingly
proved it. Several readers wrote to tell me that my statement that
"an inch is equal to 2.4cm" was in error, that an inch is actually
equal to 2.54cm. In a 4" conversion, this would be a difference of
.56 cm, or a little more than one half of a centimeter, ergo
0.22047244094488188976377952755906 inches. The metric system is not my
strong point but I do know inches <g>.
I also received e-mail from a reader, who writes, "I draw the line at
bug viewers and toy binoculars." He goes on to say that "good
quality" lenses should be the only lenses to use. It was never my
intention to give the impression that the use of "cheap and shoddy"
accessories is the way to approach any type of photography. Glass
filters and camera lenses will always produce sharper copies of slides
and negatives than plastic bug viewers. On the other hand, when you
have what might be a one-time opportunity to copy a special slide or
negative but you don't have good quality equipment on hand, it is
better to improvise and get a usable, albeit not studio quality, copy,
than to not get the picture at all.
Over the years (50+) using a variety of cameras from 35mm to large
format cut film bellows cameras and medium format rollback cameras, if
there is one thing I have learned it is that any tool or method that
allows you to capture on film or memory card the content you desire,
is a valid method for photography. I have done some wild things, from
burning papers in a room to create smoke in order to accent a sunlit
window to using mirrors to reflect sunlight onto a headstone to
highlight the inscription. Yes, photography can often be a lot of
smoke and mirrors, but it can also be a rich and rewarding experience,
if we don't get too hung up on what might be the "professional way."
Oh, by the way, I've also used a "bug viewer" with satisfactory
results.
I want to thank all the readers who take time to write. Your messages
let me know someone is out there reading. I'd also like to thank those
who recommend UpFront to others. It's fun watching our subscriptions
grow!
Now, let's move on to the business at hand and continue with part 2 of
"A Closer Look at Close-up Photography." We'll begin with a discussion
of camera styles and methods for adapting filters and add-on lenses
and then follow-up with sample shots and a short list of additional
tips for photographing slides, negatives and microfilm.
** Camera Styles **
I divide cameras into three main styles when adapting filters and
auxiliary lenses to the camera's lens.
Group # 1: This group includes those cameras with a lens barrel that
extends out from the body of the camera, and is about the diameter of
a quarter to a half dollar. (That would be about 2.4cm to 3cm in
diameter). Many of these cameras have a removable lens barrel that can
be unscrewed and replaced with a tube shaped adapter that will allow
you to mount threaded lens filters or close-up lenses over the lens of
the camera. Figure 1 shows a Canon G1 ready to receive a lens adapter
[1] http://www.NGSgenealogy.org/upfront/041503/Fig1.jpg
The lens barrel on some cameras, such as the Casio QV 3000, is not
removable. In this case, you can usually adapt the lenses by using
glue or a bit of Velcro to attach a step-up ring or UV filter to the
lens so that threaded close-up filters or other lightweight lenses can
be used. Please, be aware that using glue or other permanent method
to attach something to your camera will void your warranty.
Group # 2: Cameras in this group have threaded barrels, which readily
accept standard sized filters and add-on lenses [see figure 2 for an
example of a threaded lens barrel]. These cameras are the easiest to
adapt to close-up filters. Examples of this camera style include the
Sony 7X7 series and the Olympus E-series.
[2] http://www.NGSgenealogy.org/upfront/041503/Fig2.jpg
Group # 3: This last group includes those cameras that have a unique
way to protect the built-in lens. This group includes cameras with
rotating lenses or panels that slide over the lens to protect it [see
figure 2a]. The panel may also turn the camera on and off when it is
opened or closed. This makes it much harder to attach add-on lenses
to the cameras. Although adapters that fit over the built-in lens and
screw into the tripod mount are available for some of the cameras in
this group, others are best adapted by shooting through a loupe for
the magnification needed. Figure 2a shows two cameras of this type.
[2a] http://www.NGSgenealogy.org/upfront/041503/Fig2a.jpg
** Setups and Samples **
Now, let's look at some specific camera setups and talk about what you
need and the type of results you might expect. With each camera setup,
I used a black and white negative, and after the picture was taken, I
resized the picture, and inverted it to make a positive picture for
display. I originally wanted to use a microfilm of a document for
comparison of readability but found myself finishing this issue's
article on the road without a proper negative. This meant I had to
borrow one and the 40-year old negative of my niece was the only one I
could come up with.
Figures 3, 4, and 5: The Canon G1 is a typical example from group
1. The "out of the box" camera does not come with a threaded lens. In
figure 3, it is fitted with an after market adapter that allows the
use of close-up and other filters. The Canon G1 has a macro focus
down to 6 cm (2.4 inches). In order to copy slides and negatives, it
should be fitted with close-up lenses equal to +7, and placed on a
tripod to raise it above the film. Figure 4 is an exploded drawing of
the G1 lens setup and figure 5 is an sample of a black and white
negative that has been copied using this setup and then converted to a
positive photograph using PhotoImpact's "Invert" command.
[3] http://www.NGSgenealogy.org/upfront/041503/Fig3.jpg
[4] http://www.NGSgenealogy.org/upfront/041503/fig4.jpg
[5] http://www.NGSgenealogy.org/upfront/041503/fig5.jpg
Figures 6, 7, and 8: The Sony 707 shown in figure 6 belongs in group 2
as it comes with a threaded lens barrel. It readily accepts a variety
of standard filters and add-on lenses. Figure 7 is a drawing of a Sony
707 equipped with a set of close-up lenses equal to +7 and a UV filter
used as a spacer so that the lenses setup will be the proper distance
from the film. When the 707 is equipped with a set of close-up lenses
equal to +7, it must be only about .5cm from the film. Adding a UV
filter to the close-up lens stack raises the 707 far enough off the
film to allow it to focus when placed directly on the film. This is my
wife's favorite setup for photographing 35 mm slides, small negatives,
and microfilm. See figure 8 to view the results of a negative shot
with this setup.
[6] http://www.NGSgenealogy.org/upfront/041503/Fig6.jpg
[7] http://www.NGSgenealogy.org/upfront/041503/Fig7.jpg
[8] http://www.NGSgenealogy.org/upfront/041503/Fig8.jpg
Figures 9, 10, and 11: The Nikon 2500 and the newer Nikon 3500 fall
into group 3. These cameras have an enclosed lens configuration that
makes them hard to adapt for extreme close-up photography. Although
their macro mode allows you to get as close to your subject as 4cm
(1.6"), there may be times when you wish to magnify your subject for
an even more detailed shot by using an inexpensive loupe as shown in
figure 9. The drawing in figure 10 illustrates how to adapt the loupe
to the camera with Velcro strips. See figure 11 for a sample image
photographed using a 10x loupe.
[9] http://www.NGSgenealogy.org/upfront/041503/fig9.jpg
[10] http://www.NGSgenealogy.org/upfront/041503/fig10.jpg
[11] http://www.NGSgenealogy.org/upfront/041503/fig11.jpg
** Several other solutions that can be used to photograph slides
and/or negatives are shown below: **
Figures 12 and 13: An inexpensive slide viewer (approx. $3.00)
modified so that it can be attached to a Nikon 990 or other camera in
the Nikon 900 series [see figure 12] produces excellent copies
as shown in this sample image [see figure 13].
[12] http://www.NGSgenealogy.org/upfront/041503/fig12.jpg
[13] http://www.NGSgenealogy.org/upfront/041503/fig13.jpg
Figures 13a, 14, and 15: A loupe used for viewing "bugs" [see figure
13a] can be used with almost any digital camera. Figure 14 shows the
Canon S30 using a 7x insect loupe. The results are shown in figure 15.
[13a] http://www.NGSgenealogy.org/upfront/041503/fig13a.jpg
[14] http://www.NGSgenealogy.org/upfront/041503/fig14.jpg
[15] http://www.NGSgenealogy.org/upfront/041503/fig15.jpg
** Additional Tips for Photographing Slides, Negatives, and
Microfilm **
1. Dust particles and lint will spoil your photos. Gently clean
slides, negatives and microfilm with a simple photo brush before
photographing them [see figure 16].
[16] http://www.NGSgenealogy.org/upfront/041503/fig16.jpg
2. Make sure your lenses and filters free of dust, smudges, and finger
prints.
3. Select your camera's best quality compression setting and the
largest image resolution possible.
4. Keep the camera parallel to the film surface to avoid distortion.
5. Compose the photo using the camera's LCD screen instead of the
viewfinder. Minimize the amount of cropping necessary by filling the
LCD screen with as much image data as possible.
6. Adding close-up lenses or other magnifying devices can confuse the
camera's auto focus system. Test to see if you get better results with
the macro mode turned on or off.
7. Avoid blurry photos caused by camera shake by using a tripod and a
remote control or the camera's timed shutter release. [see UpFront,
Vol. 1, No. 7 for plans for building a copy box and several handmade
tripods.]
8. Zoom in slightly if necessary to minimize vignetting as well as
image distortion. [See UpFront, Vol. 2, No. 8 for a brief discussion
of vignetting].
In a future DIG column, we'll discuss how to build an inexpensive
tabletop studio and provide tips for capturing pictures of jewelry,
coins and other small family heirlooms. Until next time, think
digitally. --Denny
