Subject: [NJ-SOM-BOUND-BROOK] Ellis Island site & County naturalization records

Just a comment or two about records for immigrant ancestors. A relative
went to Somerset County courthouse with the year my Great-grandfather was
(supposedly) naturalized and found not his name, but papers for my
Great-grandmother's brother who arrived under an alias. We have a year of
arrival from census records, but because you can only search by name at
Ellis Isl. we've hit a brick wall on 2 people. If you can't hit upon a
spelling (or interpretation of it), you're out of luck.
There is however, an internet site that gives the names of ships, their
departure port & arrival date, but it's HUGE. May be worth a try if you know
the month & year.
Also, NARA was searching passenger records for a mere $10.00 just a few
months ago--today it's $20.00, and a copy of the manifest is even higher
through Ellis Island Foundation.
Thanks for the opportunity to rant--maybe someone has worked their way
around these problems.
