Pat,
Carl is right. It was the Jersey Central RR and it still runs. Passenger
service used to start in Raritan, and there were stations in Somerville and
Bound Brook with the eastern terminal being in Jersey City as I recall. As a
boy I used to take he train from Raritan to go to NYC for the day.We would
take a ferry across the Hudson and then subways to Times Square, Yankee
Stadium or Coney Island. There is a turntable and water tower in Raritan at
Gaston Ave where trains were serviced and turned around. Freight trains used
the same tracks coming from and going to the west of Raritan but I don't
know if they were part of the same RR or where the went. We used to walk
these tracks to an area called "The Cuts" which was a narrow passage cut
through red shale where we climbed the cliff to suspend ourselves above
passing freight trains and hunt for snakes. The Raritan station which is
still operational was between Anderson St and Thompson St. The Somerville
station is on South Division St.
Hope this helps. the RR was a big part of our lives when we were young
children growing up in Raritan.
