The extant census schedules for NYC (which at that time consisted of
Manhattan only, plus a few small islands in the East River and NY Harbor)
are for the 1840 and 1850 federal censuses and the 1855 NY State census.

The 1840 and 1850 censuses are indexed, the 1855 is not - you will have
to look up your peoples' address in an 1855 and/or 1856 NY City Directory,
then search the census schedules for that Enumeration District (not that
hard.)

The 1840 census lists just head-of-household plus a count of males
and females by age ranges. The 1850 census lists all family members,
but only the head-of-household is indexed.

The 1855 census is similar to the 1850 census but specifically lists family
relationships and asks for number of years residence in the city - often
a critical piece of information for immigrants who landed in NYC.

You can probably get help from this list or on the net with the indexes,
which are available on CD (or you can purchase them.) The census schedules
themselves and city directories are available on microfilm at a LDS (Mormon)
Family History Center in your locality.

There is a National Archives Regional Branch in Chicago which
will have all the federal census microfilms on the shelf, but not the
NY State censuses or City Directories. They may or may not have hardbound
copies or CDs of the 1840 or 1850 census indexes, depending on how
generously their patrons have donated to their local "Friends of the
Archives" group.
