To everyone who replied to my problem with finding Dammanns in NY, the
problem is partly solved. Between July of 1879 and June of 1880 my
grandfather apparently moved to Chicago. I found him (name mis-spelled) on
the Chicago census along with the Stanton family -- apparently his then
wife and her parents. So they must all have moved.

Was there an 1875 police or state census that someone could check for
Patrick Stanton, wife Bridget and five or six children? They were all born
in Ireland except for Mary, born in 1854, who was married to my
grandfather. She was born in NY.

Again, thanks to all the nice people who responded to my plea.
