The number on Jamaica Avenue, like on many street in Queens, can be confusing.
Usually a Jamaica avenue address is 5 digits, such as 174-25 Jamaica
Avenue. The first section is the name of the Street that intersects
it, the second section is the house number. Thus "174-25" is house 25
near 174th Street. (The science to it is more exact than that, but you
get the general idea.)
To confuse things further, west of 74th Street, the names of the
intersecting streets have names not numbers, and the numbering system
on Jamaica Avenue becomes conventional.
This is how the system works today; I cannot tell you how things would
have been numbered in your ancestor's time or how to decipher the
address from the 1920 census. This is, however, the reason you keep
getting an "out of range" message.
Best wishes,
James Nevius
