That should be, " ... (E)ach borough that makes up NYC has its own Dept. of
Health office that handles birth records."
Since 1914, New York City has been divided into 5 boroughs (city
administrative districts) and each of these 5 boroughs are coterminous with one of 5
vestigial counties (sub-divisions of New York State) as:
......Borough............County
......Manhattan.........New York
......Staten Island.....Richmond
......Brooklyn...........Kings
......the Bronx.........the Bronx
......Queens............Queens
Note 1: Prior to 1975, the Borough of Staten Island was the Borough of
Richmond.
Note 2: From 1898 to 1914, there were 5 boroughs but only 4 counties, as the
Borough of Manhattan and the Borough of the Bronx were jointly coterminous
with New York County. The Bronx County seceded from New York County in 1914.
