Pete,
If Peter STEVENS was a Quaker and the marriage took place within the Quaker
church, there is a record. The Quakers have been keeping very accurate
records virtually since their inception by George Fox in the 1630's. It
was Fox who designed the record-keeping system, which remains virtually
unchanged to the present, fortunately for those of us who research our
Quaker ancestors. The area and time period at which you are looking in
central NY would have been under the NY Yearly Meeting (YM). Can't tell
you exactly where the records are for that YM, but a good place to begin
looking is Swarthmore College near Philadelphia. Swarthmore is a Quaker
college, and someone in their library would be able to put you on the
scent.
Two of the central NY branches of this period were the Farmington Monthly
Meeting (MM) in Farmington, Ontario Co., NY, and the Junius MM in Junius,
Seneca Co., NY. The Farmington MM still exists. You shouldn't need more
of an address than the Farmington Society of Friends. The Farmington of
today has essentially the same population of two centuries ago. The
Farmington MM minutes (read records) were transcribed several years ago by
Frost, first name which I have forgotten.
There is a Quaker genealogy mailing list at RootsWeb, too, to which I
subscribe. There is also a Quaker genealogy website at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~quakers/.
Another direction: There are a great many DARTTs in Tioga and Chemung
Cos., NY, to this day.
Hope this was some help.
Best wishes,
Ross Bentley

> Hi, Does anyone out there know of or have any suggestions on how I might
verify marriage that took place in NY in 1839? I am trying to document a
marriage of Peter STEVENS (b. VT.) to a Elizabeth DART. Elizabeth who was
b. 6 Mar. 1822, Dryden, Tompkins Co., NY. I am only speculately that
marriage took place in or near Dryden. Believe Peter Stevens may have been
a Quaker. Appreciate any assistance. Thank you. Pete, Alaska
