The records of NY state. I have had some very enjoyable and truely helpful
people help. I live in Steuben Co. However, there are some that feel the
records belong to them. Some feel that if they can't leave you alone, that a
page may come up .missing. Unfortunatlly there have people that have stolen
the pages, in some case. These people have ruined it for the rest of us. (I
hope some of them are reading this.)
I have contacted the state of NY and have the printed the rules of the
records.
We are suppose to be allowed to see the and copy any records that are public
record, that is 75 years old.
There have been some places that have given me the run of the vault,
litterly!!
(Just a note on that..I have started a site that is going to hold all the
info that I have been able to collect. It will take me some time to type it
all up. But it will be called the TWin Tiers. I have gathered while the
getting was good so it will take time for me to organize.) Now back to the
records. Some feel that they have the rules down pat, as not according to the
printed out ones that I received from the state.
I carry them with me when I go any place searching. There have only been a
couple places that have given me flack. What the person that turned me in as
copying too many names, didn't realize that most of all my forefathers came
from this area and lived in them there hills. So I was told I was only able
to get names now that I could prove are my relative. (Why are we doing
genealogy? Dah!)
So yes you will have trouble getting some records. I have to also mention
that I ran into a long ago friend and she was telling me that when a meeting
was held in Chemung county recently, the outpoor was great for keeping open
the records.
So the records are tettering. Get them while you can, while the getting is
good.
For the thoughts of these people, I can't give a clue as to what they feel
they are covering up on records that are 75 years old. I was told to check
things out in the old papers to get my information. Quite frankly I feel
these people don't need to be guarding "OUR" records!
So needless to say it is very frustrating.
Good luck on the searching though.
