Paulette,
Cyberspace is the great gobbler of all information that is sent with good
intentions. But in spite of that, here's the best I can do with what I THINK
I know about my family.
My gggrandparents (John and Bridget) came from Ireland (according to the
1860 census) some time between 1842 and 1847. They arrived with 2 children,
Margaret and Thomas, and settled in New York City in the Bronx, King Street
I believe. Bridget had at least 5 more children, including my ggrandfather,
Edward, in 1847.
Edward married Catherine (not sure of last name). The 1870 census misspelled
the last name as Mcgrane. The 1880 census corrected this, but then labelled
him as Edwin. The 1880 census showed Edward and Catherine with 6 children,
but I think that one had moved out of the house and that three had died,
either just after birth or through disease.
My grandfather was born in 1881, so he shows up on the 1890 census with six
siblings, but minus one (Ellen) from the 1880 census. I am disappointed that
I have not been able to view the 1890 census. Anyway, Albert married
Harriett Brown somewhere around 1908 and they had 5 children, the youngest
being my father, Richard.
This is basically what I have. My biggest questions are when did the McGrain
family move to Seneca Falls and which of them moved west from there. I am
not sure, but, after talking to some people, it sounds like someone left
Seneca Falls and moved to Michigan. I have been in contact for the past year
with a woman from Bella Vista, Arkansas, Pat Magrane Stefnik, who has been
researching the Seneca Falls McGrain's and others since 1989 and has so many
binders with information on various families, that they fill an entire
5-shelf bookcase. Anything you have would be greatly appreciated by BOTH of
us. She has found McGrain/McGrane/MaGrane families all over the country and
I would REALLY like to find out if there are any relatives outside the
immediate family I know of.
If you need to contact me, I am retired and have plenty of time to talk,
unless I'm tied up with my genaology. My cell phone number is 585-615-6908.
As soon as the weather gets better, I plan on visiting Seneca Falls and
seeing what I can find down there. I'd appreciate anything that you have
whenever you have it. Thanks,
