Subject: [NYORLEAN] VanValkenburg-Mosier/Moshier/Mosher
Date: Sat, 22 Jun 2002 11:20:50 EDT
Hello, folks,
My name is Ron Hamilton and I live in Cheshire, England. I am having a
problem with the following information regarding the two above names. Would
you please be kind enough to read the text.
My thoughts are that Henry VanValkenburg married a second time to the mother
of Louisa Downey. Louisa was married in 1891 to Simon and her marriage
details do show her maiden name as being Mosier.
To confirm what I am suspecting I would need to find the marriage of a
VanValkenburg to a Louisa Mosier, which would be previous to 1891. The name
Louisa appearing in the census of 1900 and, of course, matches with Louisa
Downey. Is there anyone who can help me with this query or suggest a course
of enquiry that I might follow that will lead to the marriage details I am
looking for.
Thank you for taking the time to read this pretty long e-mail.
Best wishes,
Ron Hamilton.
In the census of 1900, for Murray, Simon J. Downey is shown as being 28 years
of age and now is a harness maker. His wife, Louisa, is shown as being 28
years of age and they have been married 8 years. With the family are the
following children:
1. Edna S. aged 7 years.
2.Louis H. aged 6 years.
3.Helen A. aged 4 years.
4.Harland J. aged 1 year.
Also living with them is Simon's father-in-law, Henry VanValkenberg, aged 68
years, widower and husband of Louisa.
Whilst searching the cemetery entries for this family I found the following
entry, 1903, at Hillside Cemetery, Clarendon:
DOWNEY, SIMON HENRY MAR 22, 1903 AUG 9, 1903 CLARENDON NY SON OF SIMON J.
DOWNEY & LOUISA F. MOSIER. I am at a loss to understand where the name
Mosier, comes in. Louisa F matches with the Louisa we have had for the past
couple of censuses. Her maiden name appears to have been VanValkenberg
bearing in mind the entry in the 1900 census regarding the father-in-law,
Henry VanValkenberg.
Here is the actual 1900 census Downey entry for the township of Murray:-
"DOWNEY, SIMON J. 28 (05/1872) HEAD NY HARNESSMKR 178 TPAR/NYLOUISA F. 28
