Hi Maureen,
This is Dee Robinson, Historian for the Town of Gaines. I am also
a Reference Librarian at Swan Library, the public library in Albion.
One place you can look is at the library. We have a local history table
where you can search. We also have old maps which may help you to find
where your relatives lived. We have Landmarks of Orleans County (1894)
with a very thorough index. If some of your relatives were here later
like 1880s-1900s, then we have newspapers on microfilm from 1824 to
present, where you might find obituaries.
I think it is worth a stop at the County Clerk's office to check
the indexes for deeds. If land was purchased it had to be recorded. If
and when you find the deed it will tell you the township, range and lot
# -- write these down because they will help us locate the land on a map
at the library. From glancing at the census on genweb your relatives
were in at least Gaines, Carlton and Kendall etc, so I think our 1879
and 1913 atlases could be of assistance.
The library is open every day of the week. Hope to see you here.
Dee
