FW Sprague Passes Away At Gouverneur

Death Hastened by Death of Grandson- Was Prominent Gouverneur Resident

Gouverneur, Mar 4.- Frank Wellington Sprague, 70, one of the oldest business
men in Gouverneur, died at his home in Barnes street at 5:45 oclock Monday
afternoon, after an illness of less than two weeks of typhoid fever. Mr
Sprague had been through the trying period of the illness and death of
his grandson, Robert Davis, 20, who had resided with his grandfather and
whose death occurred of the same disease February 15. In addition to this
Mrs Sprague has been seriously will with the fever for several weeks and
Mr Sprague was obliged to take to his bed the day following the funeral
of his grandson, which was held March 2.

He was born in Spragueville June 29, 1853, a son of Oliver and Ruth Sprague,
and with the exception of 1880-1882 he had resided in this vicinity. Mr
Sprague was educated in the Gouverneur Wesleyan Seminary and on March 22,
1875, he was united in marriage to Miss Emogene R Cross. He began his business
life upon what is known as the Temple farm in this town, which he conducted
until 1880, when he moved with his family to Odebolt, Ia, where he remained
until 1882. In that year he returned to Hailesboro, where he built a cheese
factory which he conducted for about four years.

In 1886 Mr Sprague purchased the AA Potter & Co stock of general merchandise
in Hailsboro, which business he continued until he sold out in 1900 to
GM Holmes. He came to Gouverneur 23 years ago, purchasing Isaac Burrs
interest in the undertaking and furniture business of the firm of Mosher
& Burr. He later purchased the entire stock, conducting the store under
his name until he took his son, Lynn W Sprague, into partnership. Eight
years ago the firm name of Sprague & Son was changed to Sprague & Mott
upon the entrance of Fred W Mott into the business.

In Gouvernuer he served as president of the village for two years during
1904 and 1905. He was a member of Gouvernuer Lodge, No 325, IOOF, and served
several years as treasurer of that organization. He was also an active
member of the First Methodist church here, serving as a member of the official
board until the past year when he resigned.

Besides his widow and son, Mr Sprague is survived by three sisters, Mrs
Laura A Gray, Spragueville; Mrs Helen Starner, Los Angelos, Calif, and
Mrs Carrie Rowley, Enid, Oklahoma. Six grandchildren also survive. The
funeral arrangements are incomplete.
