Star Lake- May 17- Mernie C. Daniels, 75, Oswegatchie, retired New York Central railroad employee and former Oswegatchie postmaster and town clerk, died last night about 9:30 at the Clifton-Fine hospital where he had been a patient one week.
The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Hwley Funeral home with Rev. John Blackman, pastor of the Oswegatchie Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Oswegatchie cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Mr. Daniels is survived by his wife, Mrs. Gladys L. Daniels; two daughters, Mrs. Arlo ( Hean) Harris, Oswegatchie, and Mrs. Theodore ( Barbara) Arnold, Star Lake; two sisters, Mrs. David (Frieda) McQuerrey, Charleston, W.V., and Mrs. Haines (Mildred) Atkinson, Bordentown, N.J., and four grandchildren.
He was born in South Edwards June 7, 1887, a son of Frederick C. and Viola Cheney Daniels and attended schools in Brown's Falls and Oswegatchie. Much of his youth was spent traveling with his family from town to town as his father was a machinist.
Mr. Daniels in his youth worked for his father in various paper mills until 1908 when he went to work in a shoe factory in Dolgeville. He started with the New York Central in May 1913, as a brakeman working out of Watertown.
He entered the armed forces in 1918 and served with the 87th Inffantry division overseas. Mr. Daniels married Miss Gladys Lillis in Star Lake July 6, 1921. Rev. Charles Atwood, then pastor of the Cranberry Lake Presbyterian church, officiated. He returned to the railroad service following his discharge from the army and worked for the Central until his retirement in April 1958.
Mr. Daniels was postmaster of Oswegatchie 12 years, town clerk for 22 years and former member of the Oswegatchie school board.
He was also a member of the Mervin Eno post, American Legion, Star Lake, a charter member of the V.F.W. post, Edwards, and the Oswegatchie Masonic lodge.
A Masonic cervice will be held at the funeral home Saturday at 8 p.m.
Members of the Mervin Eno post will conduct ???tary rites at the burial.
