There is a Carthage in Jefferson county and one in Lewis county but not St. Lawrence county. You might be able to locate a death certificate as town clerks generally have them from the late 1880's forward.
Many older newspapers, even from small towns are on microfilm and you may be able to locate an obit that way. Visit the site for the New York state newspaper project. Go to www.google.com and search 'new york state newspaper project' and it will display a link to the site. Be sure to search papers by community 'at the New York library' *and* 'at other locations'.
Also, use google.com for a direct name search of any person living or dead. Use the 'advanced search' to narrow the number of responses.
Also, at www.rootsweb.com, (on the first page) use the surname search feature.
Be sure to visit the appropriat usgenweb site for whatever county you might be interested in. Start at www.usgenweb.org, click on 'the project's state pages' then 'map of U.S.' then NY state. Next, click on 'county selection page' then use the drop down list to select the county of interest.
If any questions write again and ask away!
Hope this helps-
