Hi Pat,

I thought it also rather strange that I would get a request to obligate myself for payment but not receive confirmation that the research would be completed.

How very sad that we 'seem to be taken advantage of' yet there are people on this list that criticize us for 'asking' for help when the historical society they recommend does not help. Oh well, now what?!!?

Perhaps I am really spoiled because there are such great list as Huron Co, Ohio and NORCAL-L that are always available and always helpful. It is just a reminder that there are people out there who are willing to help and others who are willing to help themselves.

I still need the information from this list, New York St. Lawrence County. To whom do we have to depend on???

Thank you for responding and trying to help.

Raymond

Hi Raymond

Sorry about misleading you. But believe it or not I recently requested a family file to be photo copied and they just wrote back to me today. Yes today, you are correct, they now consider photo copying information that they have been given by someone else "as researching" and want $10. per hour, plus .25 cents per sheet photocopy fee and mailing charges. Wow! I guess they are going to pay for their new quarters one way or another. Also sent me a form to complete. I flatly refuse to do that.

I was not aware of that yesterday when I responded to you as it was always just a charge for photo copying which I felt was well worth it, but the $10. per hour is not what I consider proper for photo copying records that they really never compiled but got from someone else's work. That means that they will not get a copy of my family work that I had ready to take up there this coming fall. No way are they going to make a profit off my work by charging to send to anyone.

Please excuse me, as I stated before this is a new approach and I assume that they are trying to cover their building costs and now I found out. They also raised the fee to use their facility from $3 to $5 as I read their message. So anyone going to the Archives has to pay $5. to get in.

Regards
Pat R
