Check records for the surname "Wells" when you are going back. My ggg grandmother Louisa Dupuis of Ogdensburg ALWAYS went by Louisa Wells as her maiden name and I couldn't make any sense of it until I found out that many of the northern NY Dupuis went by Wells, Atwell, and Duells at various time, because "Dupuis" in French means "at the wells" in English!! I was unable to get over a brick wall for more than a year!

My Louisa Dupuis Wells of Ogdensburg was born and raised there, lived and died...1836-1911, and at times traveled to see cousins in Wisconsin. She married Oliver Lauer and Charles St. Onge (Santos).

If you check the Wells message board, you will see other Dupuis there. Some went back to Dupuis after they learned to read and write, some stayed Americanized to Wells. My Louisa stayed a Wells but all of her church records say Louisa Dupuis. I have an actual court affidavit where she states her name Wells is really Dupuis.
