The 1880 census is on line at www.familysearch.org. A search for the name Nathan Chapin turns up just seven in the nation (I did not specify a state) and of those just one has middle initial 'F' and he is living in NY and has wife Elizabeth. They and 10 children are in Oleans, Cattaraugus county, NY.

Start at www.familysearch.org, click on 'search for ancestors' then at left of screen click on 'census'. I always search for a name *without* searching for 'head of house'. Sometimes you think a person is head of house but it turns out they are not.

Your query is for Nathan Chapin but the subject line was John Chapin. Among the children there is no John Chapin but he may have moved out or there may be no relationship to Nathan.

If you think this is your Nathan Chapin, you may want to post a query to the Cattaraugus county mail list (start at rootsweb.com, message board, US, counties, Cattaraugus.) There would likely be wills, land records, probate records and more at the county seat. Not sure what that is but probably could find it via a google search

You may find more info at the county site under usgenweb. Start at www.usgenweb.org, click on 'state's page' then follow the links to NY and then the county.

Hope this helps -
