I viewed the 1865 NY state census at the county offices in Canton in the summer of 2002. There is just a partial census, for towns in the middle of the alphabet - Madrid, Massena, Morristown, Norfolk, Oswegatchie, and Parishville.

I checked with the county historical society to see if they knew the reason for this. Apparently the rest of the census was lost in a fire years ago. The section not lost (now at the county offices) had been taken home (against the rules) by a county employee of the time.

It is an interesting census for giving much detail about soldiers and sailors in the civil war. Be nice if someone could index and put on line what there is of it. The LDS may have it available on microfilm - you can go to www.familysearch.org and search their online catalog of films.

The copy at the county offices appears the be the original census from 1865. Whether the state retained a copy in Albany, I'm not sure. If they did, then they might have the missing towns. If you find out more I hope you will write to the mail list and let us know.

Hope this helps -
