You didn't list a birth or death year for this person so it's hard to
know whether this is relevant - Ellen Harshow, age 45, Lisbon, is listed
in the 1870 census for the county. This (Harshow) looks like a likely
variation of the name you are researching. Also handwriting is often
hard to decipher so it may be Harshaw transcribed as Harshow. You can
view this and *many* other good resources at the county site under
usgenweb.
Start at www.usgenweb.org, click on 'state's pages' then NY state then
'choose a county' and select St. Lawrence county. At the county page,
use 'select a link' and select 'census' or 'Anne Cady'. It's worth
taking the time to review any other link at the site that might provide
clues.
The 1880 census for the entire US is online at www.familysearch.org.
Click on 'search for ancestors' then (at left) 'census' and select the
1880 census. I didn't see the family in St. Lawrence county but they
may have moved to another state or Canada. The 1881 Canadian census is
also on line.
Hope this helps -

My great grandfather's sister was listed as Helen(ellen, eleanor)
Harshaw or
Hasshaw in several Lisbon wills. She was previously married to a
Harrison.
However, I cannot find Harshaw or Hasshaw in any of the census records.
Does anyone recognize this as a St. Lawrence County name?
Patti
