If you go to www.rootsweb.com, scroll down a bit and look left you will see a link for the social security death index (ssdi).

If you search (advanced search) for mildred beck born 1934 it returns a single hit for Mildred A. Beck, born 6/16/1934, last residence Daytona Beach, FL, died 9/22/1997 and social security # 107-28-8136. At the ssdi site there is an 'add post em' link that allows you to put in a note indicating your interest in the surname. You could leave your email address in a note and if someone in the future sees that they might contact you to share information. I would advise using a hotmail, gmail or yahoo account that will remain unchanged if you should change ISP's.

Knowing the date of death, you could contact your local library about Daytona Beach newspapers that might be available on microfilm via interlibrary loan. A nearby college or university might work out best but any reference librarian should know how to request the film. When the film arrives you generally have a couple of weeks to research it. There may be an obit within a day or two of the 9/22/97 death that would have some family info. If they were longtime residents of Hermon, there may be an upstate NY obit as well. There is a site:

http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/nysnp/

that lists NY state newspapers available on microfilm via interlibrary loan. Since Mildred was born in 1934 a likely date of marriage is from about 1952 to 1957. The town clerk of Hermon may be able to locate a marriage license.

Info on town clerks (names, addresses) and other town officials is listed at the St. Lawrence county site at usgenweb. Go to www.usgenweb.org, click on 'NY' then 'choose a county' and select St. Lawrence county. Click 'places' then 'Hermon' and 'roster of officials'.

If you want to 'cold call' (or write) possible relatives, check www.411.com for the Beck name in Hermon and surrounding towns (use a road map atlas for town names). At 411.com you can find addresses and phone numbers for people who have listed phone numbers.

Hope this helps -
